Sensory Play Ideas For Toddlers (That Don’t Destroy Your House)
Toddlers learn about the world through sensory exploration. The good news for parents is sensory activities don’t have to leave your home a mess. With a little planning, you can provide engaging experiences that encourage learning while keeping cleanup simple. The following toddler sensory play ideas use household items to encourage curiosity, creativity and fine motor development without creating a mess.
Toddler Sensory Play Ideas For Easy Indoor Fun
- Sensory Bins: Sensory bins let toddlers build their skills while sparking their imagination. Take a medium-sized plastic tub and fill it with a base of kinetic sand or rice, toys, measuring cups and some of their favorite plastic figurines. Guide your toddler on how to touch and scoop the base material, and let them play and explore. To keep toddlers interested, change up the base material and make a theme, such as an ocean or beach.
- Play Chore Station: If your toddlers are curious about real-world activities, like cleaning, you can create a makeshift station with water in a plastic bin, some waterproof toys, dish soap and a scrubbing tool. Gather multiple scrubbing tools, such as a sponge and washcloth, to let them experience different textures. For a cooking station, you can prepare some pasta noodles and let them cool before giving them to toddlers with safe kitchen tools and plastic dishes.
- Ziploc Painting: Take a paper or a canvas, and assist your toddler in squirting small amounts of paint in random places. Once they’re satisfied, slide and seal their canvas inside a clear plastic bag. Then, let your toddler squish, poke and slide the art around. Once it’s dry, you’ll have a piece of artwork to keep as a memory.
- Edible Sandbox: If your toddler’s looking for a sensory snack experience, blend up some graham crackers until they’re a fine, sand-like consistency. From there, add in some plastic shapes or sandbox toys, and let them play with it as they would a sensory bin. It’s a perfect solution for parents who worry that what their toddler is playing with will end up in their mouths.
